The Weir by Conor McPherson is a haunting, atmospheric play where a group of locals share ghost stories that reveal their loneliness, regrets, and need for connection.  As the evening unfolds, a newcomer’s deeply personal tale shifts the tone, exposing emotional truths beneath the surface of the supernatural.

Set in a rural pub in Carrick in the north-west of Ireland, ‘The Weir’ is naturalistic and familiar. The local men are swapping spooky stories to impress a young woman recently moved to the area from Dublin. As the drink flows and the stories become increasingly frightening, it’s clear that Valerie has something on her mind. She has a tale to tell that’ll stop them all dead in their tracks.

Behind the surface realism, however, this magnificent play has a haunting appeal. Conor McPherson writes: “Mystery is the philosophical underpinning of life. We don’t understand who we are or where we come from. A fear of the unknown is very exciting on stage.”
